About Vieques, Puerto Rico

We (your hosts, Jim and Carol Marokovics) have been coming to Vieques since the late 1980s, having heard about the charms of the island while visiting St. Croix. A bartender in Christianstead told us he had just returned from vacation. Surprised, we asked where one would go to vacation from such a paradise. To which the bartender answered that there was a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico that had not been developed and so was unspoiled and laid-back, a perfect place to “get away from it all”: Vieques. Despite being “discovered” by the travel industry in recent years, Vieques still maintains that unspoiled and laid-back atmosphere that captivated us when we visited. We still love its local businesses and the charm of a vibrant community of locals and “expats.”

Since before WWII, Vieques seved as a U.S. Navy and Marines training ground. In the 1990s, however, the military’s interest in the site waned especially as the protests against the military's activities by Puerto Rican residents native to the island reached a crescendo. In 2003, the U.S. Navy agreed to finally close their facilities and leave the island, turning the land they had occupied over to the local government and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

About Villla Bougainvillea - A rental house in Vieques

Villa Bougainvillea sits on a 100-meter-high ridge roughly in the center of the island. The main house dates from the first half of the twentieth century as one of many PRAA houses built for the residents. Through the years it is said to have served as a roadhouse providing entertainment to locals in addition to its various incarnations as a residence. Local legend has it that in the 50s or 60s it was owned by the bombardier from the Enola Gay. Following several other owners, we purchased the property in the year 2000, and have been renovating it slowly ever since. In 2006, we completed construction of what is now the nicest swimming pool on the island. With our property caretakers, we continue to add landscaping to enhance the surroundings of the pool and property.
